Reflection # 1: Meditation

I have been chanting for almost 6-7 years now. I do it because my religion requires it. But is meditation only chanting my OM's? How does is affect me? Why is it important?

Meditation is a conscious intention. During meditation I try to take a hard look at myself. It is difficult and confusing to evaluate myself objectively. It’s like looking into a mirror through a thick layer of dust. Working absent-mindedly and Narrative fallacy stop us from evaluating ourselves.Narrative fallacy is the human tendency to tell ourselves stories. Events happen and we react, then we tell ourselves stories to connect the dots in a way that makes most sense to us and puts us in the best light possible. What we are doing is lying to ourselves and we do it for so long that we lose our ability to really look at ourselves.

So meditation is when I try to make a conscious effort to step back, take an objective look at my life and be honest about my faults to myself. Meditation is also being present. Being conscious and aware of my current thoughts. It helps me mentally connect with my actions. Hard work is always conscious effort. Meditation is also planning my future. “Premeditated” means thought out.

Actions to take :

Past: Writing and blogging helps me put my thoughts in order and evaluate what I did. Daily or weekly reviews of my goals helps me see my faults and check my productivity.

Present: I chant and do yoga.

Future:I make daily MIT’s(Most Important Things to do) and monthly goals.
